Our Client, a multidisciplinary civil engineering consultancy, is seeking a self-motivated and experienced candidate for the senior management role of Structural Engineering Technical Director in the Bristol area.



  • MEng in civil/structural engineering OR a first degree in a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer with Full Membership of the ICE or IStructE.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in building structures or infrastructure design.
  • Self-motivated team player with good people skills.
  • Strong communication, analysis, technical design and drawing/sketching skills.
  • Marketing and business development skills.



This senior management role requires an individual with strong technical and management skills with some sales responsibility. The Technical Director will have P+L responsibility for a team of between 10 and 20 technical staff, will assist in the overall management of our Client’s Bristol structural engineering teams and will be responsible for the design quality, and profitable delivery of projects within their team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Project set-up and briefing.
  • Structural and civil engineering concept designs.
  • Design quality of team’s output (both technical and creative design) for both civil and structural engineering project requirements.
  • Checking and approval of principal and senior engineers’ outputs.
  • Delivery of monthly and annual profit and turnover targets for team to meet agreed targets.
  • Management of team and integration with other parties to meet agreed client programmes.
  • Finding new business - targets will vary but typically 20% of team turnover per year.
  • Business development - attending a minimum of three functions/presentations per month.
  • Correct implementation of company QA, IMS (including archiving), HR and H&S procedures within team.
  • Identifying team weaknesses and issues requiring input from the director.
  • Timely invoicing and debtor chasing, management of WIP and forward workload/resource planning.
  • Mentoring and training team members to enable their progression.
  • Implementing appraisals and setting Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-relative (SMART) objectives.
  • Inputting into the recruitment of key staff within the team.
  • Preparation of fee proposals to be authorised by the director.
  • Delivery of scheme designs and input into scheme design reports.
  • Managing circa 20-30 projects.
  • Management of the delivery of detailed design including full tender and construction packages.
  • Liaising with clients, statutory authorities, architects, the design team, and main contractors.
  • Attending key design and site meetings.
  • Inputting at management and strategic levels.
  • Interfacing with and managing the input of other Client departments (typically Transport, M&E, Infrastructure and Geotechnical teams) - providing briefing via the project briefing sheet and monitoring deliverables.
  • Business development - working with others within the company to develop the Client’s business in line with the Client’s core values
  • Agreeing appointment and contract documentation for all fee earning projects within your team.
